Avera Health has long been a leader and innovator in telehealth for years, but the demand for remote health care services skyrocketed in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. Leaning on its 25 years of experience in telehealth, Avera quickly set up a virtual visit platform to replace cancelled clinic visits, doing an average of 1,000 virtual visits daily at the height of the pandemic. Avera also used telehealth to enhance at-home care for COVID-19 patients, preventing numerous hospitalizations; for virtual rounding in hospitals; and to address medical needs in long-term care centers – especially as visitation was extremely limited to protect vulnerable residents. In this presentation, Bob Sutton, President and Chief Executive Officer for Avera Health will discuss how Avera faced the pandemic and how doctors, regulators and patients embraced telehealth, allowing it to reach its full potential.

Bob Sutton is President and Chief Executive Officer of Avera Health. Having joined Avera in 2013, Bob most recently served as Executive Vice President of Human Resources, and also held positions as Regional President and Chief Executive Officer of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre and Senior Vice President of Community Relations. His professional and executive experience includes positions as President of the South Dakota Community Foundation, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs for Citibank of South Dakota, Executive Vice President for the South Dakota Bankers Association, Executive Director of both the South Dakota Petroleum Council and South Dakota Petroleum Marketers Association, and Executive Director of the South Dakota Association of County Officials.
