GE HealthCare and Mass General Brigham will begin using foundation models as part of their artificial intelligence research.
The organizations plan to use the models with their work in medical imaging, GE HealthCare announced Tuesday at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida.

Foundation models are AI systems that more easily adapt to multiple tasks rather than having to be retrained for specific use cases, a GE HealthCare spokesperson said. They may be a better approach to integrating AI technology into healthcare systems, potentially making medical imaging services more cost- and time-efficient, the spokesperson said.
The technology could also boost imaging diagnosis, according to a news release.
The announcement is the latest development resulting from GE HealthCare and Boston-based Mass General Brigham's AI research partnership, which began in 2017.
