CommonSpirit Health and the University of Utah Health are partnering to expand care across the Beehive State.
Clinicians from University of Utah will be integrated into five CommonSpirit hospitals — Holy Cross Hospital-Davis, Holy Cross Hospital-Jordan Valley, Holy Cross Hospital-Jordan Valley West, Holy Cross Hospital-Mountain Point and Holy Cross Hospital-Salt Lake — in addition to adding more capacity for services in the region, according to a Wednesday news release.

The release did not specify when the integration would begin or how long the partnership would last. A CommonSpirit spokesperson said the two systems are still finalizing details.
Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Health is the state's only academic healthcare system and employs 26,000 faculty and staff members. The system serves patients in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyoming.
Wednesday's announcement comes a year and a half after CommonSpirit acquired five Utah hospitals and more than 35 clinics from Steward Health Care. CommonSpirit rebranded the facilities as Holy Cross, a nod to the system's Catholic background. CommonSpirit estimates it has invested more than $100 million into Utah operations since the acquisition.
Chicago-based CommonSpirit, which operates 137 hospitals and more than 2,300 clinics across 24 states, announced a similar deal in September with Kaiser Permanente to integrate services at four Colorado hospitals, starting in early 2025.
CommonSpirit continues to adjust its portfolio and capital investments to align with a market-based strategy, which includes the Kaiser agreement, the system said in its fiscal 2025 first-quarter earnings report released Monday. The health system said it is assessing priorities for fiscal year 2026, as part of a long-range planning process that may include more acquisitions and divestitures.
A spokesperson declined to provide more details on CommonSpirit's future divestiture plans.
Earlier this year, CommonSpirit sold Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco to UCSF Health.
CommonSpirit reported $189 million in net income in its fiscal 2025 first quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with a $699 million loss in the year-ago period. First-quarter operating revenue rose 11% to $9.4 billion, and operating expenses increased 9% to $9.7 billion.
