Children's Health and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center plan to break ground this year on a $5 billion pediatric campus in Dallas, the health systems said Wednesday.
The 2-million square-foot children's hospital will include two 12-story towers and an 8-story tower, with 552 inpatient beds, 114 emergency department rooms, 96 neonatal intensive care beds and 96 exam rooms. The development, to be completed by 2031, will replace the existing Children's Medical Center Dallas.

Funding for the campus will come from what the two organizations have on hand and expect to earn, access to debt markets and philanthropy, Children's Health CEO Chris Durovich said. The staff for the new facility is expected to include employees of both organizations as well as new hires, Durovich said.
Children's Health and UT Southwestern, both based in Dallas, said the project is a response to demographic trends in the area, noting the region's pediatric population is expected to double from the current level of 2.5 million children by 2050. The two systems have maintained a partnership for more than 60 years.
