AMA unveils new CPT codes for 2025

The American Medical Association released its updated list of Current Procedural Terminology codes for 2025, adding 270 new universal codes used for billing healthcare services and reimbursing providers.

The organization announced 420 updates to its list Tuesday, with several revisions and additions for genetic testing, digital health services like remote patient monitoring and care involving artificial intelligence.

By updating the digital health codes, providers and insurers will have more options to select when billing and seeking reimbursement for digital health services, which may help with the current industry debate on how healthcare technology should be reimbursed.

Remote patient monitoring service codes that were revised include digital therapeutic intervention and supplying devices to access or transmit patient data.

Multiple new AI-related codes were added, including some related to AI-driven data analysis for  electrocardiogram measurements, medical chest imagining and image-guided prostate biopsy.

The CPT's general surgery section was updated with new codes related to skin grafts for wound care and recovery as well as abdominal tumor removal.
