Walgreens on Monday named former Athenahealth Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kevin Ban to take the same role for the drugstore chain giant after it dropped its brick-and-mortar healthcare clinics.
Ban has taken over leadership of Walgreens' clinical operations and will oversee the development of its enterprise clinical programs and analytics. He will also be responsible for patient safety and healthcare information systems and programs for the company.
"Kevin's demonstrated experience and passion make him a great fit for Walgreens business and strategy moving forward," said Alex Gourlay, president of Walgreens and co-chief operating officer of its parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, in a statement.
Ban will oversee Walgreens' expansion of its digital clinical scope as the company transitions from its walk-in clinic business. Late last year, Walgreens closed 160 of its in-store healthcare clinics and entered into partnerships with health systems to own and operate another 220 of its healthcare sites.
Ban will be responsible for working with the network of third-party operators of the healthcare clinic sites.
