MarinHealth has selected Dr. David G. Klein to replace Lee Domanico as CEO starting September 1. Domanico announced his retirement from the Bay Area system in March, right before COVID-19 hit its peak in California.
Klein, a trained surgeon, previously served as President and CEO of Dignity Health's Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. Prior to that, Klein was COO and then president of Baylor Scott & White Health All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
Domanico will remain in an advisory role for the month of September to ensure a smooth transition, according to a press release.
"David Klein is an outstanding selection to take the mantle and lead MarinHealth to new levels of success," Domanico said in a prepared statement. "As a resident of Marin, David will have the best interests of the community in mind. I am pleased with the choice made by the MarinHealth Medical CenterBoard of Directors for David to build upon the momentum we've established these past 10 years."
MarinHealth's flagship changed its name in July 2019 after splitting from Sutter Health. As part of its split from Sutter in 2010, the hospital sued the Sacramento, Calif.-based system, alleging it had illegally funneled $120 million out of the hospital. About three years later, a judge awarded the hospital $32 million.
The hospital two years ago announced a 10-year strategic alliance with UCSF Health that includes clinical and information technology integration and a $110 million capital commitment from UCSF to MarinHealth. The deal also allows MarinHealth to use the UCSF Health brand. The change means all of MarinHealth's physician locations are jointly operated with UCSF. MarinHealth switched to Epic's electronic health records platform to integrate with UCSF's patient records.
"I could not be more excited about this role and the opportunity to contribute to the organization's stellar reputation for high-quality, safe, innovative, and patient-centered care," said Dr. Klein. "My predecessor, Lee Domanico, has truly set the benchmark for excellence in healthcare, and I intend to build upon the incredible legacy he has given to the community of Marin and the Bay Area at large. I also look forward to working closely with the exceptional and extremely dedicated team of professionals at MarinHealth—especially during these unprecedented times—to ensure that we continue to uphold the great values and traditions that have made us the Healing Place for our community."
