Legacy. It’s a word everyone likely thinks about at some point. What would we want to be included in the stories of our lives and careers?
For decades now, in the spirit of commemoration as well as celebration, Modern Healthcare and the American College of Healthcare Executives have teamed up to enshrine the stories of industry visionaries through induction into the Health Care Hall of Fame.
This year we honor three longtime leaders—Dr. Don Berwick, former CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Nancy Schlichting, former CEO of the Henry Ford Health System; and the late C. Duane Dauner, former CEO of the California Hospital Association. In their diverse paths they have made the business and experience of healthcare better. And in doing so they also made communities stronger and healthier. The profiles you’ll read highlight just a fraction of what each has achieved.
What are some of the words that friends and colleagues used to describe these honorees? Passion. Connection. Radical humanness. Unrelenting advocacy. Bravery. Grit. But like all the Hall of Famers, three other words certainly apply: vision, dedication and tenacity.
For all those working in an industry that touches everyone’s lives—from birth to death—they’re certainly words to live by and lead by.
