Health Care Service Corp. Chief Information Officer Steve Betts has left the company after five years in the role, a company spokesman has confirmed.
Betts' departure follows the exits of CEO Paula Steiner and Chief Financial Officer Eric Feldstein in July. HCSC did not immediately respond to questions about why Betts left. It also did not say whether a new chief information officer has been appointed.
In his role, Betts oversaw HCSC's technology needs and worked to ensure operational excellence.
"We thank Steve for his service and wish him well in future endeavors," HCSC said in a statement. "We have strong continuity in our IT leadership, and we are focused on further aligning our investments in this area with our forward-looking business strategy."
Crain's has learned Steiner's departure was the result of a disagreement with HCSC board members over long-term growth plans at the health insurer, which owns Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in Illinois and four other states.
While other big insurers have engineered multibillion-dollar transactions that obliterate traditional boundaries between insurers, pharmacies and doctors, HCSC has largely focused on its local markets and financial performance.
Prior to joining HCSC, Betts served as chief information officer at Aon, where he was responsible for global IT, including the launch of two health care exchanges, according to his HCSC bio, which has since been removed from the company's leadership page. He has a bachelor's degree in mathematics and management science from the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology in the U.K., and he attended the Kellogg School of Management's Global Executive Program.
Betts could not immediately be reached for comment.
