John Lloyd, the former co-CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, died Tuesday at age 77, the health system said.
As president and CEO of Neptune, New Jersey-based Meridian Health, Lloyd led the system's merger with Hackensack University Health Network in 2016. He served as co-CEO of the combined system for two years before retiring in 2018.

"John’s legacy lives on in New Jersey and at Hackensack Meridian Health," said Robert Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian, in a news release. "Beyond being a visionary leader, John was a wonderful man, well-known throughout [Hackensack Meridian Health] as being someone who truly cared for each and every team member."
Lloyd began his healthcare career as a administrative resident at Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia in 1972. He was named president of Neptune, New Jersey-based Jersey Shore Medical Center in 1982 and in 1997 led its merger with Red Bank, New Jersey-based Riverview Medical Center to form Meridian Health. Other medical centers later joined the system.
Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey is comprised of 18 hospitals and over 500 patient care locations. The system said in large part, its ambulatory network can be credited to Lloyd's leadership.
