Dr. Terry Gilliland has been tabbed as president of Geisinger Health and its next CEO.
Gilliland will succeed President and CEO Dr. Jaewon Ryu, who is slated to lead Risant Health, Geisinger said Monday. Geisinger signed a definitive agreement in April with Kaiser Foundation Hospitals to form Risant, with the proposed transaction expected to close in the second quarter. Gilliland is assuming the role of president immediately upon starting at Geisinger and would begin as CEO once Ryu took the reins at Risant.

Gilliland was formerly chief medical officer and chief science officer for Cogitativo, a healthcare artificial intelligence company. He previously served as the executive vice president of healthcare quality and affordability at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California, and as senior vice president and chief medical officer of Norfolk, Virginia-based Sentara Healthcare.
He additionally held several leadership positions at Oakland, California-based Kaiser Permanente's Rockville, Maryland-based Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group and Colorado Permanente Medical Group in Denver. He was also a general surgeon for Kaiser Permanente.
If the proposed deal between Geisinger and Kaiser receives regulatory approval and closes, Risant Health will acquire Danville, Pennsylvania-based Geisinger. Geisinger would still operate independently.
Risant Health has said it anticipates acquiring up to six additional health systems over the next five years.
