Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System's board of trustees has appointed chief medical officer Dr. William Jackson to be president and CEO.
Erlanger also announced it reached a separation agreement with former CEO Kevin Spiegel, whose departure from the health system was revealed last week.
Under the separation agreement, Spiegel will receive severance of 12 months' salary and cash equivalent to the cost of continuing health insurance benefits, Erlanger said in a statement Wednesday evening. Chattanooga-based newspaper Times Free Press reported his salary totaled about $964,000. Spiegel was hired as CEO in 2013.
Jackson has been Erlanger's chief medical officer for almost four years, responsible for overseeing quality, safety, physician services, research and care delivery. He was chief medical officer at Alexandria Hospital, part of the Inova Health System in Virginia, previously.
"On behalf of Erlanger's board of trustees, we welcome Dr. Jackson during this period of transition," Mike Griffin, chairman of Erlanger's board of trustees, said in the announcement. "We have every confidence that he will continue Erlanger's movement in a positive direction and strengthen relationships inside the health system and in the many communities we serve."
Erlanger, a public hospital system, reported net income of $274.1 million on operating revenue of $964.2 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2018, according to an audited financial report.
