Carilion Clinic CEO Nancy Howell Agee will step down Sept. 30.
Steve Arner, who was promoted to president at Carilion in May 2023, will succeed Agee and hold the president and CEO positions, effective Oct. 1, according to a Wednesday news release. Arner was named Carilion's chief operating officer in 2012 and added the president role last year.

Agee will be CEO emeritus through September 2025 and focus on philanthropic efforts.
In 1973, Agee joined Roanoke, Virginia-based Carilion as a nurse. She served as COO for a decade before being named president and CEO in 2011 — the first woman to hold the top executive role at the system, the release said.
Agee chaired the American Hospital Association's board of trustees in 2018. The same year, she oversaw the Carilion School of Medicine's full integration into Virginia Tech. Agee has also served on the Joint Commission's board of commissioners and on the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association's board of directors.
Carilion Clinic is a $2.4 billion system that operates seven hospitals and more than 250 practice sites, pharmacies and other facilities.
