Dr. John Whyte has been tapped as the next CEO and executive vice president of the American Medical Association.
Whyte, who specializes in internal medicine, will assume the role July 1, the physician trade group said Friday. He will succeed Dr. James Madara as CEO, who has held the position since 2011.

Whyte will not be accepting interview requests until the transition period is near completion, an AMA spokesperson said.
Previously, White served as the chief medical officer at health news and information company WebMD. He has also held leadership roles at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Health and Human Services Department and the Food and Drug Administration.
He completed his medical degree at Philadelphia-based Hahnemann University School of Medicine — now Drexel University College of Medicine — and completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Whyte also earned a master's degree of public health in health policy and management from Harvard University.
