The American Cancer Society named Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick as interim CEO, effective Nov. 2.
Frederick will replace Karen Knudsen, who is stepping down Nov. 1 after more than three years in the role. In his new position, Frederick will oversee the cancer society and the affiliated American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, according to a Tuesday news release.

Frederick is president emeritus at Howard University, having served as president from 2014 to 2023. He is also the Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine. A practicing surgeon and medical researcher, Frederick started his academic career at the University of Connecticut's cancer center. His research focuses on disparities in cancer care outcomes, particularly gastrointestinal cancers, according to the release.
Frederick has stepped down from his position on the American Cancer Society's board, which he joined in 2022, the release said.
The organization's search for a permanent CEO is ongoing. Knudsen, who announced her departure last month, will be a strategic adviser until early next year to help with the leadership transition.
