Sepsis is a condition that is as old as medicine itself, coined by Hippocrates in 400 BC. For much of history it has been “accepted as a given” that older adults die from sepsis, says Dr. Helen Pardoe, chief clinical information officer and a consultant colorectal surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in Harlow, England. Prompt identification of sepsis is a frequent challenge for ED physicians, but clinicians at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust were surprised to discover that more patients were dying of sepsis than they would have predicted.
