Amid unprecedented global health threats and the ongoing, urgent work of research and innovation to advance care, our commitment to helping healthcare systems and improving patients’ lives across the U.S. remains constant. Today, Johnson & Johnson MedTech is the most broadly based medical technology business in the world. We are launching solutions across our portfolio of companies that are improving outcomes for patients, supporting physicians in the use of state-of-the-art technologies, and elevating the standard of care. We are working to build a more sustainable health system that can withstand unexpected challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, while also addressing historic inequities that in too many communities have caused health needs to go unmet.
Powering progress to advance health and improve lives
Ashley McEvoy, Johnson & Johnson MedTech
Through our global infrastructure, deep understanding of diseases, cross-sector expertise, vast innovation network and trusted partnerships, we are maximizing the impact of our innovations to meet today’s challenges and open new frontiers of health for tomorrow. We are introducing products and advanced research initiatives that, among other things, improve eyesight, increase mobility for those with arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, enable early intervention to diagnose lung cancer, and improve the odds of survival and recovery for stroke patients. We’re also elevating the skills and proficiency of hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals throughout the country and around the world every year, leveraging our Johnson & Johnson Institute to provide access to experts, mentors and educational programs that have been designed in partnership with leading global medical societies and organizations.
J&J MedTech strives to: Improve health outcomes by giving health care providers new capabilities; bring value to healthcare systems; allow clinical settings to become more responsive to individual patients’ unique conditions and needs; and change the trajectory of disease. For example, our products reduce risks, increase operating room efficiency, decrease pain and improve overall outcomes for diseases such as osteoarthritis and atrial fibrillation that affect millions of people each year. At the same time, we know innovation occurs best through collaboration. That’s why we conduct, promote and collaborate on clinical research with the goal of generating meaningful evidence and increasing access to pathbreaking solutions. For example, in 2021, we engaged in master research agreements with five healthcare systems. Our partners include both academic medical centers and community-based settings so our products reflect the diversity of the population that will use them. And when the world needed us most, we took critical action to sustain and support the U.S. healthcare system through the COVID-19 crisis, with actions that included partnering to manufacture and rush ventilators to over-burdened hospitals and supporting first-responders with resources to help ease the toll on their emotional and physical health.
At J&J MedTech, we are doing our part to address and reverse the prevalence of deep inequities threatening the health of communities of color. For example, we’ve invested in community-based care models to create new external partnerships with medical schools – such as Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and other societies and associations – to ensure that as we make healthcare more accessible, we are also making it more culturally responsive. Likewise, our employees are using their expertise to make a difference in the communities in which they live and work. We’re working with local school districts to embed science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) enrichment activities and programs within the school curriculum to prepare the next generation for opportunities in these fields.
We are also working to promote a healthier planet by leaning into environmental sustainability across our businesses to reduce our environmental footprint. For instance, we are increasingly relying on renewable energy sources to heat and cool our facilities. We are also reducing the size and weight of our packaging and decreasing the impact of medical device parts in the environment by offering reprocessed single-use devices and reprocessed products from other original manufacturers.
Across the spectrum of care, we are creating a future where healthcare solutions are smarter, less invasive and more personalized. Our goal is to change the trajectory of disease and save lives.
I invite you to learn more about how we are creating meaningful change in the world and rising to meet the healthcare challenges of today and tomorrow.
