Encompass Health and the University of Maryland Medical System will own and operate an inpatient rehabilitation hospital through a joint venture announced Tuesday.
Birmingham, Alabama-based Encompass Health has focused on building inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and pursuing joint ventures with health systems in recent years. This is the first venture between the two organizations. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 60-bed hospital in Bowie, Maryland, which opened last month, treats patients recovering from neurological disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions. The facility also provides physical, occupational and speech therapy and 24-hour nursing care, according to a news release.
Encompass is the nation's largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, with 158 hospitals in 37 states and Puerto Rico. The University of Maryland Medical System, based in Baltimore, operates 11 academic, community and specialty hospitals.
