MARCH 10: No time like a public health crisis to delve into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s budget. That’s just what a House Appropriations subcommittee will do when it takes up the Trump administration’s fiscal 2021 funding request. Democrats are sure to hammer CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield on the proposed 16% cut to the agency’s budget. HHS officials have defended the budget by saying they want to streamline funding and focus on block grants to states. The $8.3 billion supplemental spending package signed by the president on March 6 sends $2.2 billion to the CDC to support federal, state and local public health agencies.
MARCH 11: Debate over the administration’s response to COVID-19 will continue during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing called “Coronavirus preparedness and response.”
MARCH 11: The U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are holding the first of a two-part workshop on how they plan to look at vertical mergers. As Harris Meyer reported in January, healthcare antitrust experts are disappointed that proposed guidelines offered little detail on how the government will analyze deals between organizations across the delivery system, such as hospitals and physician groups.
