Cleveland Clinic and Boston-based Amwell (NYSE: AMWL) have appointed two leaders to their joint venture digital health company, according to a news release: Frank McGillin as CEO and Egbert van Acht as executive vice chairman to the board of directors.
The two bring decades of experience to the company, which was formed last year to offer virtual access to Cleveland Clinic experts through the technology platform from Amwell (then known as American Well). The joint venture company, which does not have a formal name, aims to provide broad access to comprehensive, high-acuity care via telehealth.
"Telemedicine continues to play a pivotal role in offering safe and accessible care to patients, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic where the need for virtual access to care has significantly increased," said William Peacock, chief of operations at the Clinic and chairman of the board of the joint venture, in a provided statement. "The addition of Egbert and Frank to our leadership team reinforces the importance of making digital health a core part of our care delivery model, so more patients can access the health care services they need in convenient ways."
The company has worked to scale its digital MyConsult program, which offers clinical second opinions. It also offers health information and diagnosis on more than 2,000 different types of conditions, including cancer, cardiac and neuroscience issues, according to the release.
McGillin has held roles at Philips Healthcare and most recently served as senior vice president and chief commercial officer at NeuroMetrix. He said in the release he's confident the joint venture organization "will drive better health outcomes around the world."
Van Acht — who has experience at Procter & Gamble and has served as executive vice president and CEO of the Personal Health Business at Royal Philips —said in the release that there is strong momentum for telehealth and "a global opportunity to provide a unique, superior and safe consumer and patient experience."
"The impact of services delivered to date are already proving to guide and enhance patients' health journeys," said Ido Schoenberg, chairman and Co-CEO of Amwell, in a provided statement. "Under Frank and Egbert's leadership, we're excited to see that impact scale, bringing the world's best care to new and necessary places."
