Centura Health and Community Hospital, both in Colorado, have called off merger talks announced in October after Community's board decided it wished to remain independent.
"Although this was a difficult decision and one the Community Hospital Board of Trustees did not take lightly, the board has made the decision to remain independent. The board wants to do what is best for the hospital and the community," the two providers wrote in a joint statement.
In October, Community Hospital announced it had signed a letter of intent entering into exclusive discussions to join Centura. It said the letter was a proactive step to ensure the provider remains well-positioned to continue to meet the unique needs of the Western Slope region of Colorado and eastern Utah.
Centura Health in Centennial has 17 hospitals, 13 affiliate hospitals, home health, urgent care centers and other outpatient services. Community Hospital in Grand Junction is a 60-bed acute-care hospital with an array of outpatient services. The company had just under 1,000 employees in 2018 and provided nearly 17,000 emergency room visits.
Community Hospital said its leadership team was impressed with Centura Health and the work it's doing across the state and region.
"Likewise, Centura leadership respects the tremendous growth and physician partnerships that have been developed by the team at Community Hospital," the statement said. "Both parties remain open to discussing future partnership opportunities."
