A Champaign County, Illinois, judge reduced a $535 million verdict linked to a 2020 sexual assault that occurred at a psychiatric facility owned by Universal Health Services to $180 million.
In April, a state circuit court awarded a 13-year-old patient who was raped by another patient at Pavilion Behavioral Health System punitive damages of $475 million and compensatory damages of $60 million. Pavilion Behavioral Health is a residential treatment facility in Champaign and a UHS subsidiary.

Last week, Circuit Court Judge Jason Bohm reduced the punitive damages to $120 million, but denied UHS’ motions for a new trial and to reduce the compensatory damages.
King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based UHS plans to appeal the remaining punitive damages, the system said in an Oct. 11 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
The health system did not immediately return a request for comment.
