Family-friendly employers recognize that their staff members are juggling multiple priorities. Ask John Thomas, president and CEO of Physicians Realty Trust, how many employees the company has, and he’ll say: “We don’t call them employees, we call them family,” he said. “So we have 100-plus family members.”
The publicly traded real estate investment trust—whose leaders call it DOC, its New York Stock Exchange listing—invests in and finances construction of outpatient medical facilities in 40 states. The company-as-family culture stems from the tiny team that started the organization a decade ago.
“We were on the road together a lot and enjoyed each other’s company and we got to know each other’s kids pretty quickly,” Thomas said. “My daughter has friends across the country that she has made because they are all part of one big DOC family.”
