A record 21.3 million people signed up for health insurance in 2024 offered through the Affordable Care Act's marketplace, the Health and Human Services Department said Wednesday.
The figures include more than 5 million new enrollees. Nearly 4.2 million people with incomes of less than 250% of the federal poverty level signed up for 2024 coverage, the agency said.
Medicaid redeterminations that began last year helped push up the numbers. As of Dec. 31, about 15% of people who enrolled through the federal HealthCare.gov portal were previously enrolled in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program.
Open enrollment for plans sold through the portal ended last week in most of the U.S. It continues in four states and Washington, D.C., through Jan. 31.
