Cigna’s Evernorth Care Group will lay off 261 employees in Arizona, part of a plan to cut some specialty care services and focus on integrated primary care.
Evernorth also will close multiple locations as it evolves to meet patient needs, a Cigna spokesperson said. The company notified the state Friday of the pending layoffs.

Evernorth Care Group’s North Valley and South Mountain health center locations will close Sept. 1, and it will phase out other services in early fall, the spokesperson said. All clinicians and most staff will be given the option to relocate to other locations, the spokesperson said.
Evernorth Care Group, which is affiliated with Cigna HealthCare of Arizona, employs more than 150 primary and specialty clinicians in 20 healthcare centers and four urgent care clinics.
Last month, Cigna reported first-quarter revenue of $57.3 billion, a 23.1% increase from the prior year period. Executives attributed the gain to growth in its Evernorth Health Services division, which saw revenue increase 27.8% to $46.2 billion. Cigna's insurance unit recorded revenue of $13.3 billion, up 4.1%, for the quarter.
In January, Evernorth Care Group sold seven outpatient imaging centers to diagnostic imaging provider RadNet. That same month, it also partnered with evolvedMD, which assists with the integration of behavioral health into primary care, to expand mental health services.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said Evernorth planned to close additional locations in the fall.
