Aetna will begin offering coverage for intrauterine insemination services, increasing its scope of fertility services nationwide, the company said Tuesday.
Coverage for the services will be available regardless of a member's sexual orientation or marital status, the insurer said in a news release.

The coverage will take effect Sept. 1 for some Aetna plans and on a rolling basis for most plans at the time of renewal, a company spokesperson said. For new members, coverage will be offered to plans quoted after July 1.
Intrauterine insemination services are typically covered by insurers with separate fertility benefit coverage or for members with an infertility diagnosis. With the updated policy, Aetna will offer coverage for most of its plans.
"This policy change makes IUI available as a covered benefit for all Aetna plans unless specifically excluded," the spokesperson said. "For example, Medicaid and Medicare coverage is always based on state and federal guidelines and self-funded commercial customers may modify their coverage of any benefit."
The updated policy marks one of the company's first moves since the departure of CEO Brian Kane and CVS Health's $2 billion cost-cutting plan, both announced earlier this month.
