Healthcare associations reporting lower contributions, higher expenses

Modern Healthcare tracks the financial data of several healthcare associations. So far, 12 associations serving individuals have reported fiscal 2022 data. Here are five takeaways about how they fared compared with 2021.

1) Median income from contributions and grants was down.

The American Association of Critical Care Nurses reported the largest year-over-year percentage decline in contributions and grants, at 77%.

2) Median program service revenue increased.

The American Urological Association reported an increase in program service revenue of 82%, the largest year-over-year percentage change.

3) Investment income was better for most.

Of the three associations reporting a decline in investment income from 2021 to 2022, the American College of Physicians reported the steepest: a 92% decrease.

4) Median total expenses were up, but not just because of salaries.

Median salaries rose only 0.4%. The largest change in salaries was at the American College of Radiology, with a 9% increase from 2021. Its expenses increased by 13%. Meanwhile, expenses at the American Urological Association increased 29%, while salaries increased about 6%.

5) Median net assets declined.

Both the Society for Neuroscience and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists posted a 17% drop in net assets, the largest changes among the reporting associations.
