How does your company make you feel excited to be part of the team? Maybe you get free pizza on Fridays, or maybe you have the option to work remotely whenever it makes sense. You might feel deeply connected to the mission. Or you have the chance to be celebrated at employee appreciation parties.
With healthcare workers — especially those on the front lines — facing burnout, many organizations have used these kinds of strategies to make retention and recruitment a priority. Modern Healthcare's Best Places to Work in Healthcare awards program looks to honor those employers keeping their staff engaged and productive.
Does this sound like your organization? Nominate your workplace today.
Employers from all sectors of the healthcare industry are eligible, including providers, insurers, associations, vendors and trade groups. The program will honor 150 workplaces, with special Community, Family-Friendliest and Healthiest awards.
Here's what to know.
How is it determined which companies make the Best Places to Work in Healthcare list?
Experts from our partner, Workforce Research Group, determine a score for each organization based on a two-part assessment. The employer assessment portion determines 20% of your score, and the remaining 80% comes from your employee feedback surveys. The organizations with the top 75 scores in each of the two categories — provider/insurer and vendor/supplier — will make the list.
What do you consider a provider versus a vendor or supplier?
To be considered a provider, at least 50% of your organization's revenue must come directly from providing healthcare services.
Providers will enter in one of the following categories:
- Hospital (including acute-care and specialty)
- Post-acute care (including nursing homes, long-term care facilities and hospices)
- Physician group
- Primary care or specialty clinic
Insurers will enter as an insurance company/payer.
Anything not included in the above list will be considered a supplier (including labs, imaging centers, third-party administrators and technology providers, vendors, group purchasing organizations, universities, professional organizations, etc).
What are the Community, Family-Friendliest and Healthiest Awards?
Modern Healthcare will issue special awards for organizations that score highly on questions related to the following criteria:
- The Community Award will go to those organizations that demonstrate commitment to public service, such as through employee volunteer programs, charitable donation matching initiatives or service days. See the winners for 2024.
- The Family-Friendliest Award will go to workplaces that offer benefits such as on-site childcare, lactation support programs and time off to take family members to doctors' appointments. See the winners for 2024.
- The Healthiest Award will be issued to companies that support work-life balance or wellness via initiatives such as fitness programs, gym reimbursements or nutritious snacks at the office. See the winners for 2024.
Companies do not apply for these awards. They are based on the same two-part assessment as the main ranking.
How do you determine the listed locations for winning organizations?
Modern Healthcare will use the "location of nominated workplace" field on the registration form.
Can multiple nominations for the same organization influence the selection process?
No, multiple submissions for one organization do not influence the selection process in any way.
Who selects the winners for the Best Places to Work in Healthcare program?
Winning organizations are selected based on a quantitative assessment conducted by our partner, Workforce Research Group.
When will the winners be notified?
The winners will be notified that they have made the list the week of May 5. This notification will include an embargoed press release template and information regarding licensing, congratulatory ads and awards and certificates. The rankings will be announced at the Best Places to Work Awards Gala on Oct. 8 in Nashville, Tennessee, with the list available online and in print after the gala.
Will I be notified if the organization I nominated does not make the list?
Yes, if you have registered your organization for consideration and it does not make the 2025 Best Places to Work in Healthcare list, Workforce Research Group will notify you the week of May 5.
