Healthcare by its nature is in a constant state of transition as new discoveries, drugs and players enter the marketplace. The extent of that change has seemed greater this past year, with revamped care models, a wider understanding of population health, significant changes at providers and payers and a host of regulations touching almost every corner of the industry.
Our 2023 class of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare honors the executives leading the companies and organizations helping reshape the conversation about how care is delivered in this country. Our honorees are C-suite decision-makers guiding their organizations, making sweeping changes that benefit their bottom lines, the patient or hopefully, both.

Our top 10 honorees includes three leaders of federal agencies, including one who got our nod for the most influential person in healthcare in a year when policy changes dominated much of the conversation. It also includes executives in insurance, technology and accreditation—three parts of the industry that were very much in the news.
On our broader list there are leaders who year after year wield clout and influence in healthcare, along with more than 40 people who weren’t on it last year. And for more than 30 leaders, it’s their first time being honored, a sign of the people and organizations whose voice and influence have grown in the past 12 months.
What do you mean by ‘most influential?’
The awards seek to honor healthcare leaders who wield influence and clout and are making an impact in the industry. But being a healthcare leader doesn’t mean they work at a health system or insurance company. Some of the most influential executives are working in technology, investment firms and advocacy groups.
How does someone get on the 100 Most Influential list?
Nominations for the award were open June 5 through Aug. 16. Readers voted on ballot of 300 names between Aug. 28 and Sept. 18.
Who selects the 100 Most Influential honorees?
The senior editors of Modern Healthcare select the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare, based on nominations from the public, reader voting and input from Modern Healthcare’s newsroom.
Can someone be honored more than once?
Yes. We selected our first class in 2002, and over the years there have been many leaders who are repeat honorees. Chip Kahn, president and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals, has been on our list every year.
What’s the makeup of the 2023 class?
The 2023 class includes more than 30 women, more than 30 people of color and a good representation of the various facets of the industry, including providers, payers, tech companies, associations and government.
