Camille Baxter:
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Insider, a sponsored content podcast series from Modern Healthcare Custom Media. I'm your host, Camille Baxter, and today we are speaking with Dr. Logan Song, enterprise cloud director and chief cloud architect of Dito. Logan has more than 25 years of experience working with clients ranging from Google and Amazon to Dell and large healthcare organizations. He understands the healthcare environment and has a proven track record improving data, security, and cloud migration outcomes. Before we dive in, we'd like to thank the sponsor of this episode, Dito. Dito is a full service Google Cloud enabler that makes transformations as close to perfect as possible. Dito drives innovation, enables change, and most importantly transforms organizations. Since 2007, Dito has helped thousands of organizations change the way they do business by employing smart Google Cloud technologies. Today, we are talking to Logan about how healthcare organizations can leverage Google Cloud to enable better data collection, improve security, and innovate. Logan, thank you so much for being here today.
Dr. Logan Song:
Thank you, Camille. I'm so honored to be here today, and hello everybody.
Camille Baxter:
I was reading a little bit about you, and I saw that you had wrote a book and used to be on Wall Street. I'd love to hear a little bit more about your book and how you transitioned from Wall Street to Google.
Dr. Logan Song:
Yes, sure. So I graduated from University of Buffalo with a PhD in information, and industrial, and computer science. So after that, I worked in Wall Street for 8 years and then 12 years in EMC/VMware, traditional IT, and then Steve Jobs actually inspired me moving to the modern information technology industry, including cloud computing and machine learning. And then after that, I worked in AWS Cloud, in Google Cloud, and then we were helping the healthcare industries and all the industries because of the modern technologies transforming the industries and change our lives so much.
Camille Baxter:
Well, you have such an interesting background and I know you've done a lot with young people. You're an educator as well, and you work with students and different people through ACP. So it's really great to get to learn a little bit more about what you're doing and where you're taking technology through your career. Let's start with a question for our audience, and this is also for me as well, in case they aren't aware, we're all familiar with Google and we use Google Cloud, but what function does that serve in healthcare?
Dr. Logan Song:
Sure. As you know, Google Cloud is one of the largest cloud services providers in this world, and Google Cloud is well known for its specialties, elasticity, security, data analytics, and machine learning. Google Cloud provides many services in the cloud, including data ingestion, processing, analyzing, and business intelligence, data governance and compliance, service automation, and many others. So Google itself, it's a leader in the artificial intelligence, and Google Cloud helps healthcare companies to manage and unlock the power of data with the best performance, the most hardened security, and the optimized cost.
Camille Baxter:
And data is everything. It really drives everything in healthcare as healthcare has become more and more technology oriented in order to deliver the best patient care and to measure that. So how can healthcare organizations like hospitals and health systems leverage Google Cloud? And what operational functions does it help them with?
Dr. Logan Song:
I think you must have heard of two things, one is about data. It used to be that petroleum oil was the most precious asset on earth, but not anymore. Nowadays, data is the most important treasure. And the other thing you probably have heard of is about artificial intelligence. You know that in the last century, electricity transformed all the industries and changed our lives so much. Imagine if we don't have electricity, we cannot live really. In this century, we expect artificial intelligence will transform our industries and change our lives just like electricity power did last century. As you mentioned, modern healthcare is data driven, and we needed to unlock the power of data, and Google Cloud is the best platform for healthcare data collection, processing, and analyzing from the prospective of performance, resiliency, security, cost, and many others. For healthcare data, Google Cloud has something very special, it is called Google Healthcare Data Engine. It brings the power of Google big data analytics, including BigQuery, and artificial intelligence to the healthcare industry, enabling healthcare organizations to process terabytes of their patient data and business data efficiently and securely, and provide intelligence and business values.
Camille Baxter:
Let's dive a little deeper into that and pull back the layers of the onion on that a little bit. Google Cloud enabler can effectively secure patient healthcare data and medical records. So what's unique about the cloud that it can secure this data?
Dr. Logan Song:
Right on, healthcare data and medical data have specific security and compliance requirements, such as HIPAA and many other compliance requirements. And that's exactly what Google Cloud can provide to the healthcare data, security and compliance. Google Cloud provides healthcare data, de-identification. We have some personal identifiable information, we call that PII, and Google has services to do that, and we call that data loss prevention. And Google also provide security services for healthcare data encryption and many others that protect customer healthcare data and medical records. Google Cloud have a service called security command center that can check all the resources in the cloud, identify security misconfigurations and non-compliance configuration. That is amazing. If something in your resource configuration are not compliant with the standards, it's going to let you know what it is and even recommend how to fix them. So in a nutshell, Google Cloud provides all kinds of security services to protect the healthcare data, unique and effective.
Camille Baxter:
And it sounds like because it allows them to amass and collect more data, and then de-identify that, that then healthcare organizations can use that data more efficiently for making decisions about how to deliver care or where to take their healthcare system. Would that be appropriate?
Dr. Logan Song:
Sure, yeah. So I think what you're saying is really when the healthcare hospitals and health systems, when the leaders, they want to make important considerations, then how they can leverage or utilize Google Cloud. So Dito, that's our company, we're a Google partner. We're actually the security partner of the year for 2021 and we have been helping many healthcare companies to transform into the cloud. During the process, we have accumulated many experiences. So when the healthcare leaders implement Google Cloud, we think, based on our experience, finding the right Google Cloud partner is one of the most important things they need to consider. What Google does is they don't have professional service, per se, they work with the partners to transform the healthcare providers to the cloud. So with the right partner, things go smoothly, efficiently, and the best results can be achieved.
Camille Baxter:
So Google Cloud is the tool and then Dito would be the partner to help that healthcare system effectively implement and use that tool. Would you say that was correct?
Dr. Logan Song:
Absolutely, yes.
Camille Baxter:
Okay. So you talked a little bit about what Dito has done with some of your customers. Can you share an example from a Dito healthcare customer that's implemented Google Cloud and what were the benefits that they experienced?
Dr. Logan Song:
Absolutely. My favorite client is the Hackensack Meridian Health, we call it HMH, and they are the New Jersey's largest healthcare provider. So as a Google partner, Dito start the first Google project with HMH at the beginning of last year. Within about two years, from 1 project we helped them, we did it so good, we expand to 10 projects. So whenever HMH have a need during their emergency states, some like their chief architect left, things like that, they call Dito. Why? Because we help them to leverage Google Workspace, and Google Chrome OS devices, and Google Cloud across their clinical and business environment. We provide them the highest quality design and implementation, and we help them to build an infrastructure to deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning in their key clinical areas, including patient pre-screening, disease detection, et cetera. In a nutshell, we helped HMH build a secure performance-resilient automated cloud infrastructure for their data scientists, their research and development team, and many, many other teams, and we helped them to transform the way healthcare is delivered to thousands of patients across New Jersey and across the United States.
Camille Baxter:
Logan, this has been so helpful, not only for our audience, but really to help me as well better understand Google Cloud and how it's used in healthcare. Thank you so much for talking with us today about this important topic. Is there anything else you'd like to add before we wrap up?
Dr. Logan Song:
I think that's pretty much. Yeah, thank you very much, Camille, for having me here. And healthcare industry is the forever industry, there are so many data, so many things. We could leverage the Google Cloud to unlock the power. So Dito, and myself, and Google, we look forward to expanding more in the healthcare industry and helping more healthcare providers to do the cloud transformation. Thank you very much.
Camille Baxter:
Thank you so much. Really appreciate learning more about this and it sounds like there really is so much more opportunity for Dito to help healthcare systems to be more effective in how they use data. Thank you for talking with us today about this important topic and the exciting work that you're doing.
Dr. Logan Song:
With Google Cloud, with artificial intelligence, with the big data, we're changing the world. We are working together for a better world and better health. Thank you, Camille.
