The number of CMS cost reports for certain psychiatric facilities—church-owned and private for-profits and not-for profits—grew 31% from 2012 to 2017. And although fewer in number, rural facilities grew at a higher rate (54.5%) than their urban counterparts (28.9%), according to data in Modern Healthcare Metrics. In 2017, average profit margins for these psychiatric facilities in rural areas also outpaced urban locations.
