After leading the fight to unionize her facility two decades ago, Castillo has worked her way up through the ranks of the labor movement to lead National Nurses United, the largest professional association of registered nurses in the country. Castillo has been an outspoken proponent of Medicare for All, testifying on the subject before the Senate Budget Committee in 2022, and for the adoption of safe nursing staffing models amid a healthcare employee shortage.
