Chief digital and technology officer, Clever Care Health Plan
Unmesh Srivastava’s mother is a doctor in India. When she traveled to California to stay with her son, however, she and Srivastava struggled to find a local provider who spoke her language and understood her cultural interest in herbal medical treatments. Once Srivastava did, he said, his mother’s diabetes dramatically improved.
The memory keeps Srivastava motivated in his role as chief digital and technology officer at Clever Care, a Medicare Advantage insurer that seeks to serve Asian customers by offering coverage of Eastern and Western medicine.
“When you have a little bit more heart in [your job], that's what leads to great impact,” Srivastava said.

Srivastava oversees product engineering and management, customer experience, data and analytics, cybersecurity and more at the six-year-old startup.
Since he joined Clever Care in February 2022, the team has built an in-house customer relationship management system that includes language and ethnicity data about the insurer's 22,000 members. Call center agents rely on this information to serve individual member needs.
He credits competing in a local cricket league and hiking with his family with keeping him grounded at the fast-moving insurtech. Srivastava also advises and invests in other local health tech startups.
“There is a dearth of good leaders,” Srivastava said. His advice to other would-be leaders: "If you practice and keep working hard, you’ll get there. I'm a first-generation immigrant in this country. If I can do it, then a lot of other people can.”
