R. Shawn Martin
Executive vice president and CEO, American Academy of Family Physicians
Martin has served as the head of the association since 2020. His most recent accomplishments include transforming AAFP’s clinical education offerings into a centralized hub and learning management system, scheduled to launch next year. He has also restructured AAFP membership to bring in new-to-practice family physicians at a lower membership dues, a move that is expected to boost AAFP’s ranks among earlier-career primary care practitioners and make critical resources more readily available. For example, Martin negotiated a benefit that provides no-cost disability and life insurance to every third-year family medicine resident in the U.S. He has championed professional development among AAFP staff: The organization launched a program this year to foster vital leadership skills among all managers. He additionally introduced a revamped employee performance assessment program to align individual and strategic goals.
