Markovich’s leadership has propelled bold moves by the insurance company, which will cover more than 5 million people in California in 2025. Last year, the organization announced it would collaborate with Amazon Pharmacy, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co. and other stakeholders to streamline access to medications for members. Blue Shield of California predicts the initiative will save about $500 million in annual drug costs once fully implemented; this year, the project saved a reported $100 million. It also struck a deal to buy a lower-priced version of a popular drug directly from a manufacturer and offer it to patients at no cost. Leaders say the strategy is likely to save at least $20 million over three years. Beyond Blue Shield of California, Markovich has advocated for policies such as one implementing a statewide data exchange framework.
