NBBJ
Design and Construction
OVERVIEW: NBBJ has been at the forefront of innovative design for over 80 years, using creative solutions to address complex challenges. Today, the firm is tackling rising construction costs through an innovative prefabrication approach that reimagines hospitals as modular components manufactured offsite and assembled onsite. This method improves construction efficiency while maintaining high standards of care, ensuring equitable healthcare access regardless of income level.
IMPACT ACHIEVED: A prime example is NBBJ’s partnership with Atrium Health in North Carolina, where the firm leads the largest prefab healthcare construction program in the U.S., encompassing six new hospitals. This initiative has already saved Atrium $100 million across the first three hospital projects and includes Carolinas Medical Center, the nation’s largest extensively prefabbed hospital, with 60% of its components built offsite.
DISTINCTIVE EDGE: Atrium’s Director of Planning Design and Construction Sarah Francis said of working with NBBJ, “It has added value to our organization in terms of capital cost reduction and by creating a consistent, branded patient experience across urban and rural hospitals.”
