Joseph Impicciche
CEO, Ascension
Impicciche, originally hired as Ascension’s general counsel in 2004, has prioritized quality care, financial performance and operational efficiency at the 136-hospital organization. Under his leadership, healthcare-associated infections fell 20% across the St. Louis-headquartered system, while acute-care patient volume increased. Impicciche has also made narrowing disparities a major goal: Maternal mortality rates at Ascension are 50% lower than the national average, and Ascension distributed 115 million free medication dosages to patients over the past year. He additionally helped launch the Ascension Foundation for Health Equity to promote maternal health and improve the medical career pipeline for underrepresented populations. In 2024, Impicciche was appointed chair of the Catholic Health Association, representing more than 650 hospitals and 1,600 acute care facilities. He also serves on the American Hospital Association board of trustees.
