John Carpten
Chief scientific officer, City of Hope
Carpten has been working to increase diversity and representation in biomedical research throughout his career. In 2022, President Joe Biden appointed him as the first African American chair of the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Advisory Board. He helped to create the African American Hereditary Prostate Cancer Study Network, a coalition of predominantly Black researchers and doctors collaborating on a national study on prostate cancer. At Duarte, California-headquartered City of Hope, where he holds two chair appointments, his team’s discoveries have enabled the organization to more efficiently connect study participants with appropriate clinical trials.
