As a child, Dr. Herbert Pardes would daydream about helping others.
“Since I was 3 years old, I had a fantasy of working in a city where I could take care of everyone,” he said. “I like thinking more about who I can do something for instead of thinking about my own needs. [This consideration is] an innate part of who we are as healthcare workers.”
That compassion propelled Pardes through a career spanning academic psychiatry, government service and management, including 11 years as president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. Along the way, Pardes was elected president of the American Psychiatric Association and was appointed by Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to health policy commissions.
