James Adams
Bexar County Hospital District
Adams, a board of managers member since 1998 and chair since 2012, brings an extensive corporate leadership background to his role overseeing the public hospital district in San Antonio, which operates as University Health. System improvement and expansion have been high-priority issues during his tenure. Capital projects include a six-story outpatient clinical services pavilion on the city’s historic Robert B. Green Campus downtown that opened in 2012, and the 10-story, 1 million-square-foot Sky Tower at University Hospital in the South Texas Medical Center, which opened in 2014. The new University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital, a $700 million initiative, is scheduled to open in August. Another top concern under Adams’ leadership has been diversity in governance. For the first time in the organization’s history, most of the board members are women of color.
