Dr. Shephali Wulff
System vice president of quality and safety, SSM Health
Wulff is an infectious disease specialist for the St. Louis-based 23-hospital system. She led the development of a multi-disciplinary initiative to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections, central line-associated bloodstream infections and hospital-acquired Clostridium difficile across the system. Between 2021, when the prevention strategies were introduced, and 2023, the system reported a 61% decrease in CAUTI; a 36% decrease in CLABSI; and a 50% decrease in hospital-onset CDI. The successes are estimated to have saved $5.7 million in healthcare costs and prevented 201 instances of direct patient harm over the two-year period.
