Dr. Mehdi Shishehbor
President, University Hospitals Harrington Heart and Vascular Institute
Shishehbor oversees the divisions of cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and cardiovascular medicine at the institute, a unit of the UH Cleveland Medical Center. He co-led a clinical trial showing many patients suffering from limb-threatening wounds caused by peripheral artery disease could avoid amputation and see their wounds healed via a procedure that diverts blood from diseased arteries into the veins of a patient’s calf, delivering oxygenated blood to the foot. The Food and Drug Administration approved the procedure, developed in part by UH experts, in 2023. Shishehbor also started the health system’s Limb Salvage Advisory Council, which convenes vascular surgeons, interventional cardiologists, podiatrists and other experts to discuss patients at risk of major amputation.
