Dr. James Madara
CEO and executive vice president, American Medical Association
Madara’s influence has been key to efforts addressing barriers for doctors seeking help for depression and other behavioral health concerns. AMA under his leadership has partnered with other groups to work toward the reform of credentialing and licensing questions that could stigmatize mental illness. In early 2024, the National Association Medical Staff Services removed mandated disclosures about diagnosis and treatment for past mental illness and substance use from its Ideal Credentialing Standards, and Massachusetts hospital and health plan leaders committed to cut possibly shaming questions from their credentialing processes.
