Dr. Dora Hughes
Acting chief medical officer and acting director, Center for Clinical Standards and Quality, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Hughes was appointed to her current roles in 2023. Under her leadership, the CCSQ executes clinical, quality and safety standards for healthcare facilities and providers and recommends Medicare coverage determinations. The office developed the nursing home staffing mandate, which has attracted tens of thousands of comments since it was released as a proposed draft. Hughes previously served as chief medical officer for the CMS Innovation Center. Before that, she helped with the passage and early implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
