Winners of Modern Healthcare's 32nd annual Design Awards are at the forefront of two major industry trends: building flexible spaces that can withstand dramatic changes to the healthcare delivery model and re-connecting patients and their providers to nature in environmentally friendly facilities.

Situated in a 27-story tower with views of downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan, the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the first-ever “translational” research hospital where clinicians and scientists work alongside rehabilitation patients.

The completion of the $14 million Indian River Medical Center Scully-Welsh Cancer Center in Vero Beach, Fla., finally gave locals a reason to stay in town for their treatment.

This year's environmentally friendly award winner, designed by architecture and planning firm NBBJ, is adjacent to Mineral Springs Park, a site where Native Americans used red mud for healing purposes, said Brian Uyesugi, lead designer on the project. Now, the LEED Gold-certified building brings a modern interpretation to that history.
