Market president, Select Health of South Carolina
As Medicaid redeterminations were set to resume last year, Courtnay Thompson, market president at Select Health of South Carolina, was determined to keep eligible members enrolled.
There’s a lot at stake for the AmeriHealth Caritas subsidiary, which covers more than 331,000 Medicaid beneficiaries in the Palmetto State.
Thompson, a registered nurse, and her team have dedicated themselves to contacting members to facilitate continued coverage and have come up with creative ways to do so. For example, Select Health hosted an event at a laundromat in an area with a high concentration of its Medicaid enrollees to help them with the process and to provide household items, such as baskets and detergent.

Select Health also conducted outreach in multiple languages and partnered with community organizations to elevate its message. Other AmeriHealth Caritas insurers have adopted interventions spearheaded by Thompson and her team.
More broadly, Thompson directs Select Health’s growth strategy. She said the company aims to expand its footprint.
Thompson was Select Health’s youngest market president when she took the job in 2018. She credits female colleagues with mentoring her, and she hopes to carry that forward for others. Her approach is often influenced by her background in nursing, she said.
“On paper, this is our member who's in the hospital. But I worked in a hospital, so I know what a discharge looks like. I know what a conversation about what the needs are after you get home looks like,” Thompson said.
