Chiquita Brooks-LaSure
Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Brooks-LaSure’s tenure as the head of the country’s largest payer has been marked by several notable policy rollouts aimed at furthering transparency and health equity. This year, CMS finalized proposals requiring states and Medicaid insurers to annually report multiple data points, including provider payment history and Medicare rate comparisons. The agency also released a comprehensive report on the effects of hospital-at-home programs and developed a five-pronged plan to reduce data breaches and promote accountability among healthcare organizations. It enacted changes to Medicare Advantage rating systems — potentially making it more challenging for carriers to reap hefty bonus payments for top quality scores. And it announced the early results of drug-price negotiations with major manufacturers, slated to go into effect in 2026 and potentially save the government hundreds of billions of dollars.
