April Verrett
President, Service Employees International Union
Verrett was elected to serve as the president of the organization in April. She is the first Black woman to lead the union, which represents 2 million members who work in healthcare and other sectors — including hundreds of clinicians who have voted to unionize with SEIU affiliates this year. Verrett previously led SEIU’s strategic planning process as its secretary-treasurer for two years, along with stints chairing its Naitonal Home Care Council, co-chairing the National Organizing Committee and serving on its Finance Committee. She also advocated on behalf of more than 400,000 long-term care providers as president of SEIU Local 2015. In her new position, Verrett will steer the union in its 10-year plan to grow its ranks by 1 million members.
