VillageMD, a fast-growing primary care chain, kicked off 2023 by finalizing its acquisition Summit Health-CityMD, a provider of primary, specialty and urgent care, in a deal worth nearly $8.9 billion. By October, the company operated more than 800 practice locations in 26 markets. Many of those are co-located with Walgreens pharmacies; Walgreens Boots Alliance took majority ownership of VillageMD in 2021 with a stated goal of opening 1,000 clinics by 2027. Barry’s aim is for VillageMD to become a multispecialty provider, although the company will continue growing its primary care base as well as CityMD’s urgent care business. Before VillageMD, Barry filled leadership posts at Accretive Health, Universal American and Blue Shield of California.
