Since assuming her position at WellSpan, an eight-hospital system serving central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, in 2019, Gapstur has been focused on increasing access to care. In 2023, the system introduced on-demand virtual care, reporting more than 6,000 visits in the first eight months of operation. Also this year, WellSpan announced plans to build three neighborhood hospitals–which will include an emergency department and up to 10 inpatient beds–in south central Pennsylvania. The facilities will be built in partnership with Emerus, a neighborhood-hospital operator, and staffed by WellSpan-employed physicians and advanced practice providers. In July, WellSpan implemented a $17 per hour minimum wage and a weekend differential for hourly staff. Gapstur is chair-elect of the board of the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.
